We were appointed by a developer client as landscape architects for this proposed residential development in the Green Belt. Our landscape architect services covered the development of a high-quality landscape design for the site. We worked closely with the client and wider design team to coordinate the proposals.
We then prepared landscape architect information to satisfy the Reserved Matters conditions. Following this, we produced a coordinated external works tender package. Finally, our landscape architect undertook site inspections as the external works progressed.
The site occupies the eastern edge of Bulphan village. Mature hedging bounds three sides of the site. The landscape architects retained this existing hedgerow structure as an important landscape feature. The public highway surrounds the site, with the A128 Bulphan By-Pass along its western edge.
In addition, several mature trees grow within the existing hedges. These trees were retained and incorporated into the landscape design. The main development area contained ruderal vegetation, several dilapidated agricultural buildings and scattered pioneer trees.
Our landscape architect’s remit focused on creating a high-quality setting for the proposed detached dwellings. The design also responds carefully to the site’s rural character and existing vegetation. Furthermore, our landscape architects carefully considered the spine road layout and site levels.
The landscape design integrates the existing topography with the proposed carriageway and finished floor levels. This approach helped create an efficient and coordinated external works strategy. The landscape architects also designed all areas to meet the relevant accessibility requirements.
The carriageways and footways use a single-level surface. However, changes in paving colour provide a clear visual indication of ownership. A dished drainage channel also provides separation between different areas.
Meanwhile, the landscape architects incorporated a sustainable drainage system (SuDS) into the landscape design. This strategy reduces the volume of surface water discharged into the surrounding river network. Along the western boundary, the landscape design also incorporates a Thames Water asset.
Overall, our landscape architect services provided a coordinated landscape framework for the development. The design responds to the site’s rural setting while integrating highways, drainage, accessibility and existing landscape features.
