We were appointed by a contractor client as the landscape architect for this infill residential development behind an existing block of flats. We prepared the landscape architect’s tender and construction information packages. Furthermore, we based the detailed landscape design on the approved planning information prepared for Riverside Housing, a housing association client.
The 0.27 ha site occupies a brownfield plot. Previously, the site contained an underused car park to the rear of existing dwellings along Baring Road. However, the plot also contains several mature trees, including trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). The site falls approximately 2m from west to east.
The landscape architect designed the pedestrian and vehicular routes as a shared surface. Both routes sit flush with each other. However, contrasting paving clearly identifies their different functions. In addition, the landscape design keeps all carriageway sight lines free from visual obstacles. This approach helps minimise the risk of vehicle and pedestrian collisions.
The new communal garden sits between the existing and proposed buildings. It provides an attractive shared amenity space for both existing and new residents. The landscape design incorporates grass, a permeable footpath and informal areas for relaxation. In addition, the garden includes play equipment for children under five and a picnic bench.
Our landscape architects carefully considered the proposed site levels. We also coordinated the paving and wall details around the retained TPO trees with the project arboricultural consultant. Furthermore, we specified permeable paving within the root protection areas. This allows water and oxygen to continue reaching the existing tree roots. We also calculated the drainage levels and gradients to support Building Regulations Part M compliance.
Finally, our landscape architect team prepared the landscape information required for the planning submission. This earlier planning stage work established the basis for the subsequent tender and construction information packages.
