90 Hills Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

We were appointed by the employer’s agent for this commercial refurbishment project near Cambridge train station. As the appointed landscape architect, we developed the initial sketch landscape design with the client and wider design team. Following approval, we prepared the landscape architect’s information required to discharge the planning conditions. We then prepared detailed landscape information to support the tender of the external works.

The landscape architect’s role focused on the building frontage facing busy Hills Road. The significant level difference between the main entrance and lower pavement required stepped access. Therefore, we worked closely with the architect to integrate the access arrangements into the wider landscape design. The paving materials and handrails complement the existing building frontage.

The stepped route provides the primary pedestrian access to the office development. Consequently, our landscape architect design had to comply with Building Regulations Part M. The restricted space prevented the inclusion of a compliant ramp. We therefore incorporated a platform lift into the landscape design. This provided an accessible route while maintaining the functionality and appearance of the entrance.

We developed a simple, linear planting design for the frontage. The planting palette uses robust species suited to the urban environment. In addition, the scheme combines evergreen shrubs with deciduous plants that provide attractive winter stems. The landscape architect’s brief required a significant proportion of evergreen planting at the front of the site.

The planting also provides visual screening for a basement car park ventilation outlet. The outlet discharges air below the upper paved entrance level. Therefore, we selected plants that provide sufficient height and density to screen the vent effectively. This approach integrates the required ventilation infrastructure into the overall landscape design while maintaining an attractive entrance to the commercial development.
