We were appointed by a design and build contractor as landscape architects for the refurbishment of a school in Newham, East London. Our role covered the full landscape architecture process from planning through to construction. This included preparing landscape architect information for the detailed planning application and discharging planning conditions. We also produced a comprehensive landscape architect tender package. As construction progressed, our landscape architect team monitored the landscape works and provided design comments.
Working alongside the architectural and engineering design team, we developed a landscape design to upgrade the existing school environment. The proposals supported the construction of a new sports hall and additional classrooms. In addition, the scheme included an upgraded main pedestrian entrance and improved playground facilities. Our landscape architect services therefore covered both the functional and visual aspects of the school’s external environment.
The design process included consultation meetings with the school and participation in a public exhibition. Consequently, we gained a clear understanding of the school’s operational requirements. We then refined the landscape design to respond to the needs of pupils, staff, parents and visitors.
Because the school accommodates nursery, reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils, our landscape architects divided the play provision into three distinct areas. Each space responds to the different ages and needs of the children. Furthermore, we maintained clear sight lines throughout the play areas. This allows staff to supervise children effectively during playtimes.
Our landscape architect services also considered vehicle access, parking and deliveries. We carefully balanced the requirement for on-site parking with the need for delivery vehicles to manoeuvre safely. At the same time, the landscape design created welcoming spaces for parents dropping off and collecting children. These areas provide pleasant places to wait, meet and socialise.
The site contains numerous trees around its perimeter. We retained the majority of these trees as part of the landscape strategy. Furthermore, our landscape architects carefully considered their root protection areas when developing the building layout and external works. This approach helped integrate the new school facilities while retaining established vegetation and maintaining the site’s existing landscape character.
