Our developer client appointed us as the landscape architect for this new-build residential development in North London. Initially, we prepared a sketch landscape design for client review. Following approval, we developed the detailed landscape architect information required to tender the external works.
Our landscape architecture package included a landscape general arrangement drawing and planting plan. It also included planting schedules, detailed landscape sections and a full NBS specification. Therefore, the package provided the information needed to progress the external works efficiently.
The proposed residential development occupies a former workshop site. Existing rear garden boundaries surround the site on all sides. In addition, a single narrow alleyway from Clyde Road provides site access. Consequently, improving the existing boundaries and access formed an important part of our landscape architect brief.
Our landscape architect design proposed a shared surface for the main public area. This space fronts the residential entrances and creates a welcoming arrival experience. It functions as a home zone, allowing pedestrians and vehicles to share the same surface. However, the design also accommodates occasional delivery and refuse collection vehicles.
Vehicle speeds within the shared space will remain very low. As a result, the layout can support informal doorstep play and pedestrian activity. The proposed paving also uses a permeable construction. This approach helps minimise surface water runoff and supports Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles.
For the courtyard, our landscape architect specified a combination of evergreen and deciduous planting. The planting strategy provides seasonal interest throughout the year. In addition, strategically positioned trees provide greater privacy for residents. They also help protect the privacy of neighbouring properties.
Finally, the rear garden landscape design provides a simple and flexible layout. Each garden combines paving next to the house with lawn and perimeter planting. This approach creates practical private gardens while maintaining a consistent landscape character across the development.
