Our landscape architect team was appointed by a housing association client to prepare landscape architect information for a detailed planning submission. The project proposes an infill residential development behind an existing housing association block of flats. In addition, our landscape architect considered the landscape surrounding the existing dwellings.
The site occupies a brownfield plot with an existing car park behind the residential buildings. A public highway borders the site to the west. Private residences adjoin the southern and eastern boundaries. Military buildings sit along the northern edge. Furthermore, the site contains several mature trees, including trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders. The site also falls by approximately 2m from west to east.
Our landscape design comprises four key areas: car parking, pedestrian circulation, a play garden and private residential gardens. Due to the restricted site area, our landscape architect adopted shared-surface principles. The proposed traffic environment allows for low vehicle speeds. Therefore, pedestrian and vehicle surfaces remain flush. Contrasting paving materials clearly define each use. In addition, our landscape architect kept all sight lines free from visual obstructions.
The communal garden serves both existing and proposed residents. It includes play equipment suitable for children under five. Our landscape architect also designed the space to create an attractive and welcoming setting for the wider residential community.
As the landscape design developed, we prepared materials for several public consultation events. We also attended these events to present the proposed landscape scheme. Following each consultation, we reviewed and collated the comments received. Where appropriate, we incorporated these comments into the final landscape design.
Our landscape architect carefully considered the proposed site levels. This was particularly important around existing trees that would remain. The design also accommodates level thresholds throughout the development. Consequently, the landscape design supports the requirements of Part M and provides accessible routes across the site.
Finally, we prepared the landscape architect information required for the construction phase of the project. This included detailed landscape information to support the implementation of the approved residential landscape design.
