London Wall Place, City of London, London

Within this archaeologically rich site lie the remains of St Alphage Church, part of the Roman Wall that once encircled Londinium, and St Alphage Garden. Our landscape architects were appointed by the main landscape contractor to develop the landscape design and provide detailed construction-level landscape architect information for several external works elements.

Our landscape architect team developed detailed information that enabled the contractor to secure client approval for these specific landscape elements. This approval formed a necessary part of the contractor’s contractual requirements. In addition, the landscape architect’s drawings enabled the contractor’s fabricators to prepare shop drawings for review before manufacture.

Initially, our landscape architects prepared three detailed landscape design “mock-up” packages. These covered the clamber terrace adjacent to the remains of St Alphage Church, the concrete seat and paving junctions, and the water feature. Consequently, the client could test different stone finishes and material junctions before selecting the final appearance.

Our landscape architects then developed the detailed design for the wider site. This included comprehensive schedules and setting-out information for the weathered steel, or Corten steel, landscape edgings. The edging design also allowed flexibility around proposed below-ground services and associated infrastructure.

Next, our landscape architects developed the detailed design for all bespoke public seating. The seating incorporated galvanised steel structural elements with timber tops. Careful attention to the fixing details ensured that the components integrated successfully with the wider landscape design.

Finally, our landscape architects developed the detailed design for the water feature bridge. We worked closely with the structural engineer to create a low-profile structure capable of accommodating the anticipated pedestrian loading. As a result, the bridge design combined structural requirements with the architectural and landscape character of this historically significant London site.
