Aylesbury S05 & S06, Walworth, Southwark, London

We were appointed by a contractor client as landscape architects for this 0.83ha new-build residential development on the northern boundary of Burgess Park, Walworth. The development comprises two residential blocks, S05 and S06. Together, they form the second phase of a three-phase scheme.

Both blocks feature central courtyard gardens surrounded by buildings of varying heights. S06 includes a ground-level courtyard, roof garden and viewing platform at Level 14. This roof garden sits above the south-east corner tower. Similarly, S05 provides a Level 1 podium courtyard, roof garden and viewing platform at Level 18.

Our initial landscape architect services focused on satisfying landscape-related planning conditions. This included general arrangement drawings and sections through the podium deck build-ups. We are now finalising the landscape architect’s construction information and works packages. Both residential blocks are due for completion later this year.

At ground level, our landscape architect team responded carefully to the existing site conditions around both plots. In addition, the project required compliance with Building Regulations Part M4(3) for a significant number of ground-floor dwellings. Each dwelling therefore includes a private patio and boundary planting.

We also developed the planting design for both courtyard gardens. Our landscape architects selected species to suit the specific growing conditions of each space. Furthermore, the planting provides year-round interest and supports a strong garden character. A significant proportion of evergreen planting creates a consistent green backdrop throughout both courtyards.

The courtyard gardens provide private patios, age-appropriate play spaces and communal growing areas. They also create attractive places for residents to relax and socialise. Meanwhile, structural planting defines different spaces within each garden. These range from open communal areas to more intimate garden settings.

Through our landscape architect services, we have developed coordinated landscape information for the residential development. The design responds to the podium construction, accessibility requirements and the needs of future residents. Ultimately, our landscape architecture approach combines practical construction requirements with high-quality residential landscape design.
