The Dean, Alresford Hampshire

We were appointed by a developer client as landscape architects on this proposed residential development scheme located at the north western edge of the village of Arlesford, Hampshire. Our landscape architects initially developed a sketch landscape design to the satisfaction of our client and design team. We then prepared a landscape architect ‘s package of information to support a detailed Planning submission for this ‘brown field’ site.

The existing site contains a number of commercial buildings and associated car parking areas, all of which are to be demolished. There are a number of semi mature trees at the western end of the site that are to be retained. The site is access at its east end, from The Dean and there is a significant rise in level of 7.5m from the site’s entrance to the playing fields to the west of the plot boundary. There is an existing right of access along the plot’s north edge which serves the adjacent commercial premises.

Our landscape architect’s remit was to accommodate the existing site constraints listed above within our final landscape design. In addition, it was a stipulation of the Local Authority that a new public footpath be accommodated within the site that is to connect The Dean to the playing fields. Accommodating this proposed footpath was particularly challenging for our landscape architects due to the existing site level constraints and the number of trees required for retention at the western end of the site.

A shared carriageway is proposed by our landscape architects at the heart of the site, between two residential blocks. This space accommodates the requirements of the fire tender, refuse vehicle and delivery vehicles whilst providing a pedestrian zone for the local residents. The landscape at the western end of the development is located on a podium deck which is situated above a car parking area. All planting within this are is to be located within raised planters.

Pieris Place, Bulphan, Essex

We were appointed as landscape architects by a developer client for this proposed residential development located in Green Belt. We were tasked to develop a landscape design to the satisfaction of the client and other members of the design team. We then provided landscape architect ’s information to satisfy Reserved Matters Conditions, this was followed by the production of coordinated external works tender package of information. Finally, landscape architect’s inspection reports were required as the external works proceeded on site.

The site is located at the eastern edge of the village of Bulphan and is bound on all three sides by mature hedging, this hedging was to be retained. It is surrounded by public highway, with the A128 Bulphan By-Pass being located along its western edge. A significant number of mature trees are located within the existing hedge and these were also to be retained. The main body of this development site was covered by ruderal vegetation with a number of dilapidated agricultural building and stands of pioneer tree species scattered across the site.

Our landscape architect’s remit was to provide a high quality setting for the proposed detached dwellings in this rural location. Our landscape architects gave careful consideration to the layout and levels of the spine road, ensuring the existing topography worked efficiently with the proposed carriageway and FFLs of the dwelling. All parts of the site were designed so as to be DDA compliant.

The carriageways and footways were designed as a single level surface, with paving colour providing a visual indication of ownership and a dished drainage channel providing separation. A SUDS strategy was incorporated into the landscape design, this minimised the volume of surface water being discharged into the surrounding rivers. Along the western edge a Thames Water asset has been incorporated into our landscape design.

Mill Farm, Richmond Upon Thames, London

We were appointed by a contractor client to review the existing landscape design prepared by the previous landscape architects which was approved by the Local Authority. We were then tasked to provide landscape architect ‘s information to satisfy Planning Conditions for this residential development located in Richmond Upon Thames. Our project landscape architect and team then produce a fully coordinated landscape package of information to enable the tender of the external works.

The existing site is bound on three sides by commercial buildings and on the fourth by the rear gardens of the adjacent residential properties. The entrance to this plot is via an access road and footpaths at the south corner of the site. Just outside of the north and east boundaries there are a number of existing trees all of which needed to be protected from the implications of this development

The entrance to this development leads into a space which is bound by the proposed building, creating a space for car parking and pedestrian circulation. All primary access route levels were carefully considered and were Part M compliant. Also contained within this space are a number of front gardens and one of three children’s playground associated with this development. To the rear of the building our landscape architects designed private gardens for each ground floor unit, ornamental communal gardens for use by all residents and two children’s playgrounds.

Our landscape architects coordinated the location of the attenuation tank with the civil engineer which located below a number of the car parking spaces. Its considered location ensured the proposed trees thrived and the tank performed its function unimpeded.

The coordination of below ground services with the Mechanical & Electrical consultant and civil engineer was also part of our our landscape architect’s remit, this was particularly complex in the vicinity of the entrance to the site.

The root protection areas of the existing trees to the perimeter of the site were carefully considered at the outset of the design process. Our landscape architect worked with the appointed arboricultural consultant to ensure their continued healthy growth.

Park Grove, Acton, Ealing, London

We were appointed by a developer client to review an existing landscape design then provide landscape architect’s information to discharge landscape related Conditions for this residential development located in Acton, West London. Our landscape architects then produce a full package of landscape architect ‘s information to enable the tender of the external works.

The proposed built form is located on a podium deck ground floor slab with the slab extending beyond the envelope of the building. Below the ground floor slab a basement car park is located with the car parking being accessed via a ramp at the rear of the building. The ground floor slab also accommodates a number of private ground floor patios to the front of the building. Our landscape architects worked closely with the structural engineer and architect to achieve a satisfactory drainage detail within this zone. The planting details were also carefully considered so as to ensure a health growing environment was provided for the planting specified.

Natural ventilation to this car park was partly achieved by vents located within the shared amenity space. Our landscape design attempted to provide an appropriate level of quality for these elements in order that they were seamlessly accommodated within their surrounding context.

All private patios which abut the shared amenity spaces needed to have an element of defensible space. Our landscape architects suggested the erection of a 1.8m high London stock brick walls and shrub planting to achieve this aim.

The plot boundary to the busy East Acton Lane and The Vale needed to create an appropriate edge to the site. A London stock brick and railing wall was erected. Behind this wall  a hedge and a row of trees were planted. Our landscape architects specified trees which would provide some visual screen between the mass of the building and the carriageways.

Maurice Wilkes Building, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

We were appointed by a client’s agent to provide landscape architect ’s information to support a detailed Planning application for this office development located close to the A14, north Cambridge. A sketch landscape design was prepared and presented our client for approval. Once signed off our landscape architects prepared information for a detailed Planning submission, including a full landscape design statement. This was followed by the production of information to satisfy Planning Condition and full tender pack of landscape architect’s information. We were then responsible for monitoring the on site works as they progressed to their completion.

The proposed building is located  at the south end of an existing business park with a busy primary road to its west. To the west and south plot boundaries numerous existing trees are present. To the west, south and east boundaries existing hedges are present. Running east west, across the south corner of the plot, an over head power cable is in existence.

The architect’s proposed built form is square in plan and located at the south west corner of the plot. Our landscape architects’ primary task was to accommodate the Local Authority’s required number of car and cycle parking spaces within the plot boundary. In addition, the boundary treatment was particularly sensitive to the Local Authority. This was given careful attention careful attention by our landscape architects and a sensitive solution was reflected within our landscape design.

A public amenity space for the use of employees is located to the south of the building. Our landscape architects designed this space so as to accommodate the vehicular over run requirements imposed by delivery, fire tender and cleaning vehicles. In addition, our landscape architects worked closely with a sculpture workshop to integrate a piece of art within this space.

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) is an integral part of the landscape design for this project. A combination of swales between blocks of parking and permeable paving within the parking bays were used to achieve a sustainable drainage design.

St Luke’s Square, Canning Town, Newham, London

We were appointed by a developer client to provide landscape architect’s information to support a detailed change of use Planning application for this residential development in Canning Town, east  London. Our landscape architects initially presented our client with a sketch landscape design for approval. Once signed off we proceeded with the preparation of landscape architect ’s information, including a landscape design statement, for a detailed Planning submission. This was followed by the production of information to satisfy Planning Condition, then a full tender pack of landscape architect ‘s information.

The existing built form is ‘U’ shaped, with its open side facing south. Contained within the building footprint is a courtyard space which is entirely located on a podium deck slab to a basement car park. Our landscape design afforded privacy to this space by proposing the planting of shrubs and trees to its open south elevation.

Our landscape architects carefully considered the perimeter detail to the building edge, where the residential units abut the public footway. The Local Authority were interested in how overlooking from the street into the individual dwellings would be prevented. In addition, within this zone our landscape design needed to accommodate the horizontal venting grating to the basement car park.

Our landscape architects needed to design a courtyard space that accommodated a variety of functions. Each ground floor dwelling required a private patio facing the courtyard space.  Privacy from the adjacent shared space was considered important and raised planters with appropriate height planting solved this issue. The primary access for a significant number of the ground floor units is via the courtyard space. DDA compliant access was therefore critical to all primary access routes.

The landscape design for the shared amenity space within the main body of the courtyard  accommodates the varied requirements of the passive user, the active user and a that of a children’s playground. In addition, it provides the primary pedestrian access network for this development.

Chadwell Street, Islington, London

We were appointed by a developer client as landscape architects on this proposed residential development in north London. Our scope was to develop a sketch landscape design for client approval, then to provide landscape architect ’s information to support a detailed Planning application. Our submission package consisted of general arrangement drawings and a landscape architect’s design statement which contained plans, rendered graphics and text.

This development plot was a former car parking area located within the New River Conservation Area. It is bound on all sides by the existing party walls of the adjacent residential dwellings. Access to the site is restricted to a single route off Chadwell Street and it was anticipated that the final proposal would not accommodate any on site vehicles.

Our landscape design needed to consider the pedestrian circulation routes through the site. As the site is relatively compact, overlooking needed to be carefully considered within our proposals. Our landscape architects introduced as much planting as possible into our proposals. This planting was intended provide a sense of privacy for those occupying this proposed site and to provide some screening for those existing residents surrounding this site.

Within this development a significant proportion of the residential units are to be located below ground level.  Our landscape design needed to carefully consider the lower ground floor spaces, both the private patios and a communal space to access a number of dwellings. We needed to introduce planting at the ground floor level to provide privacy  from overlooking, whilst allowing in as much natural daylight to the lower ground floor level as possible.

Surrounding the existing site are a number of existing trees. The site wide masterplan needed to consider the location of these trees within its design. In addition our landscape architects needed to carefully consider the detailing at ground level so as to minimise the potential detrimental impact of ground works on their health.

MHT, Crescent Lane Clapham, Lambeth, London

We were appointed as landscape architects by a developer client on this refurbished building project. Once our initial landscape design sketch was approved we proceeded with the preparation of landscape architect ‘s information to satisfy Conditions. Our landscape architects were then tasked to produce full tender and construction packages of landscape architect ‘s information to enable the external works to be tendered and built. Finally, we were appointed to monitor the on site external works.

The entire landscape zone surrounding this existing building needed to be completely reconfigured. The landscape needed to accommodate off road parking, private gardens, shared amenity space, an under 5’s children’s play ground, a footpath network and storage for cycles and bins. Within the landscape zone a number of existing trees needed to be retained. The detailing of these trees at ground level was carefully considered by our landscape architects so as to minimise the detrimental impact of ground works and general building on their health.

Our landscape design retained the existing boundary wall and gates to Crescent Lane in their original position. For everyday use, separate gates open for pedestrian and car access. However, when refuse vehicle or fire tender access is required both gates will open. The pedestrian surface (which is flush with the carriageway) then functions as a vehicle over run.

Careful consideration was given to the north west corner of the site as these two private gardens are at lower ground floor level. It was critical that adequate light could enter these spaces and their respective dwellings.

To enable this development to take place an existing Tames Water main sewer needed to be relocated through the landscape zone. Our landscape architects worked with our clients civil engineer to carefully considered Thames Water’s comments. We developed a route which satisfied Thames Water’s requirements whilst providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape design.
